When You lost And We Both Won

Raj said, " Check Mate... I defeated you in my first game of chess"

His Father, " Oh! Well done... I'm so proud of you.

After 15 years, Raj asked his dad, "How I could've defeated you as a kid in chess. You were a champion, Dad.

His dad smiled and said that you have not defeated me. I lost the match and we both won.

( Raj is a rising star in the world of chess and really his dad won even when he lost that one game of chess).

College Memories: When you don't exist?

I have always been  a student who was somewhere between good and average.

I was a bit shy and reserved and had few friends from a long time.

This incident occurred during 3rd year of engineering.

One fine day, couple of class mates  informed me that the Ma'am who taught Engineering Economics had asked me to meet her urgently.

I was wondering why she might have called me. Have I done anything wrong that I have been asked to meet her. I was concerned about my attendance, but then realized that I loved Economics and have not bunked her classes.

But, I was getting anxious as in last 3 years no one has summoned me to meet them, it was an altogether new experience.

Finally, I reached her cabin,

Me- Good Morning , Ma'am!
She- Good Morning
Me- Ma'am, you have asked Ravi to inform me to meet you.
She- No, I have asked him to send Rohan.

( I was shocked)

Me- Ma'am, I am Rohan
She- How come? I have never seen you in the class?
Me- But, Ma'am I have hardly missed any classes.
She- How it could be possible? I don't recognize that you have always been in the class?

( I was wondering about what was going to happen. Why was she behaving like this?)

Me- Ma'am, I never missed your classes, and why have you called me?

She- Well I believe you, else how could you have topped in the class and have got 45 out of 45. ( I could see that she still felt she didn't know me)
Me- *Poker Face*

What do you feel about tough time and tough people?

I too have a story probably not much fancy but still, I want to share it.

As a kid, I was weak in Maths and struggled a lot to get better. It was early 90s and I had been regularly punished in the class for my dismal performance.  I remember making silly mistakes in exams and then my tutor will scold me. He would often put a finger between my fingers and will press it hard as a punishment. Please don't blame him, this kind of punishment was Ok in early 90's in a sleepy town of Eastern India. Then, my father started tutoring me and slowly things started to get better. I hated maths but now,  I want to meet that Tutor to thank him for teaching a dumb student like me. He had a thankless job as I always wanted him to be sacked from his job of teaching me.  For me, he was a tough person but, he was only playing his role to make me stronger, in his own unique way. I have realized that everything happens for a reason.

After class-3 or 4, Maths became my favorite subject till date. I know how much fun it was to solve challenging questions of Algebras, Calculus, etc. For me complex number was not complex at all. It made my IIT Preparation amazing. I failed at IIT JEE but still I am proud of the experience. It was another thing that it bothered me like anything when it happened. Difficult things happen to make us stronger. In my college, I have got the highest grade in my 4th sem Maths paper, which is sadly my last paper of Maths.

Life is more than the grades we get, the job we have or the money in our bank account. The real money we earn in this life is through experience and all experiences  are good experiences. I define a so called bad experience as a tough experience, which is needed to teach us difficult lessons.

Our Failures, Tough times and Tough people teach us more about our-self. They make us push our limit and try harder. If everyone will be goody goody then we might not put that extra effort that differentiates Good from Outstanding.

Please forgive tough people if you have any hard feelings for them. If possible give them the credit for the thankless job that they did for you. And, cherish the tough times as our present is a result of our past struggles.

A True Story - Ek Cup Chai ( One Cup of Tea)

Chotu...ek cup chai lana ( Chotu, Please bring one cup of Tea)

When Raju was 13, he came to Mumbai to support his family. In Mumbai, he used to serve tea in offices. One day, one of the companies where he served tea, hired him as an office assistant.

He was a class 6th dropout so they assigned him works like serving tea and coffee in the office, opening the office, cleaning and other odd jobs. But, Raju got a spark to learn and improve his life. He studied after his work hours and gave exams for clearing Class Xth. He failed in first attempt but didn't lose hope and cleared the exam in 2nd attempt. After that he cleared 10+2 through distance education.

Not only this, side by side, he also learned about web development and the company made the wise decision of promoting him as a Web Developer.  Now, he is pursuing his graduation in commerce from Mumbai University. He is happily married and has a one-year old son. He wants to give his son a better education. So, he still has the fire to keep learning and improve his quality of life.

This is the story of Mr. Raju Yadav who is a web developer for Shaadi.com. I read about him few months ago and you can find news articles about him by googling " Raju Yadav Shaadi.com"

This story has inspired me to encourage two of our office boys to continue their education. They were also inspired from his story. Let's hope we get many more Raju. It has been rightly said that

"Jinke honslo mein udaan hoti hai wo aasmaan ki uchayion se nahi darte  "

How to make a situation awkward?

Hey this is my favourite!!

I was requesting my co-worker to provide me some critical inputs for my assignment which he failed to provide despite several reminders. So, I shoot an email to him which read as

Rajat, I am fed up chasing you for this critical information. Hope you are not interested as it would take you hardly 15 minutes to provide me this critical input.

I marked the Project Director  in that email.

I got his very polished reply within 5 minutes, which read as,

Hello Rohan, I am sorry for the delay, please find attached my inputs.

Then, he came to my desk to tell that I shouldn't have involved the Project Director. He was visibly unhappy. I told him that it was a prank, I have not marked my email to the Project Director.

Thanks for your valuable inputs. And by the way, from next time, do give attention to details.

( He was feeling awkward and tried to hide it with his smile)

Have you wished your Mom, Happy Mother's Day?

Dad: What happened to him?

Mom: I don’t know. He is not talking to me since last night.

Dad: (to him) Tell me what has happened?

He: ( Keeps Mum)

Dad: (Opened the newspaper to read it ) Oh! Today is Mother’s day… have you wished your Mom

He: Didn’t uttered a single word

Dad: Ok…you have not. It’s Ok. Even I have not wished my Mom. ( when Ma was there we never knew of Mother’s day)

(As his grandma had already demised long ago, the pain in the voice of his Dad made him cry)

He: I am sorry Mom…Happy Mother’s day!!!

Mom: Thank you! I have made your favourite dish. Now, smile, I feel pathetic when you don't talk to me.

He: Just hugged his mom.

A short story

The girl is a doctor and guy is an engineer. He was unconscious after the accident and woke up in the hospital only to find that she was treating her.

It was an uncomfortable silence as 3 years ago he left her with the words   "I would never meet you again" but the world is really small.

Office Office : A short story

Boss: Raj, what are you going to do on this weekend.

Raj: Well, I am just planning to be at home and relax....

Boss: Ok..enjoy you weekend!!

Raj came home after a long Friday to find out that his mother and wife were  arguing over whom he loved more.

Mother and Wife together : Raj, just tell us whom you love more

He was like... whatever I will say.. I will be screwed... It was much more difficult than boardroom meetings. So he was just praying to God to help him out with his eyes wide open and a broad smile to hide his feelings.

Suddenly his phone rang. Oh.. its BOSS. ( He felt as if God has called)

Raj: Hi John, how come you call?

Boss: Hi! Raj, the project that went live today has hundreds of issues and the London office is banging me like anything. Tomorrow cancel all your plans and come to office sharp at 7:00 AM as we need to work all day and night, this weekend to get out of this mess... suddenly phone disconnects...

Raj: What??? Oh my God!!!!!!!(gives a shocking and very frightening expression)

Wife and Mom together said: what happened?

Raj: Boss has again got a stroke and I need to rush to take him to hospital now and goes out of the house and says huhhh.... aaj phir bach gaya ( Huhh.....Got saved again)

An amazing short story on Presence of Mind

It was the year 1997 when  many people planned a mass protest against a transport company. People felt that the company is not paying due attention to quality of service. After an outstanding run of two years, the company was going through a lean patch. They earned bad reputation because of couple of incidents of unacceptable behavior by their drivers.  Then few serious accidents also made the matter worst for them.

The employees of the company were in constant fear to lose job as they could sense the public sentiment against their company.

A mass protest was scheduled on a sunny afternoon to put pressure on the government to ban the company from operating.

But then...the owner of that company came with a unique idea.

He asked all his drivers to ferry people to and fro from the place of protest free of cost so that people don't face any trouble in commuting.

People were surprised by this move.  They couldn't understand what made the company to facilitate a protest that will ruin their business. But, the confusion diluted the intensity of the protest.

Some felt that this was a heart heartwarming move by the company... Few felt that the company is trying to bribe them.

But, when the people started to discuss the public opinion.

Everyone was surprised that the majority changed stance and felt that the company must be given an opportunity to improve and should not be banned.

So, in this way by his out of the box thinking, the owner of the company averted a disaster saved his company and thousand of jobs. Later, he never looked back and became one of the best company of the country.

INDIAN SHARING- A Cultural Shock for many

INDIAN SHARING - Brilliant Example

When I was a Kid we never went to restaurants, we had another way to please our taste-buds

Well, this one is an outstanding example of cultural differences...

One friend went to US and there his family developed healthy friendship with his neighbors who were native Americans.  My friend's family used to send some special dishes to his neighbors as they loved Indian food.

But, there was a problem in continuing this practice as their neighbors never returned the utensils in which food was being sent to their home. My friends' family felt awkward to ask their neighbors to return the utensils.

Then, one day my friend borrowed a screwdriver from his neighbor and when he went to return it. They were like, why are you returning? I have already given this to you. Did you not like this or what? In fact, his neighbor was a bit offended by his act.

Then, my friend's family gradually realized that Americans don't lend or borrow things, either they will not give something or they will give it forever. They don't expect you to return things. Hence, his neighbors never realized that this Indian family was puzzled why their utensils were not getting returned.

(Now those who don't know this custom, let me explain this)

In India, we have a culture to share the occasional delicacies we cook at home with our neighbors. It's like many people in BIHAR (an eastern state of India) don't know how to cook Idlis or Dosas like the people from South. So, whenever, Idlis or Dosas would be cooked at our home then it would be shared with few of our neighbors as my mother knows how to cook it like a native.

And then after some days, our Neighbors will return favor by sending something to us in the utensil in which we have send them Idlis/ Dosas, Chatni, Sambhar, etc. It's an unspoken tradition which I have seen  for years although in metro cities, this practice might be rare. Probably due to this practice, as a kid I didn't needed restaurants to please my taste buds.

Once upon a time, I wanted to grow up

When I was a kid, I wanted to grow up fast so that I can earn money and explore the world......now as I am grown up, I just want to be a kid again....

When I was in school.. everyone told me to work hard so that life will be easy thereafter.
.
.
.
Then during my engineering preparation days, everyone told, work hard now and then you will go and relax in the college............life will be much easier in college and all that....

Everyone told that get a job in a reputed company and life will be a cake walk after getting a plum job in a MNC.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
When in Job, miss my college days...when in college miss my engineering preparation days and school days.
.
.
.
.
Now.. I have realized ( these are carrots which are only shown and not given) sab moh maya hai... e wrong number hai.. Still searching for the original propagator of this humble idea.

Old Man and his dream

I am an old man who came to this world some 70 years ago. As a child I lived in a village where my father was a school teacher.  I had many friends in my village. But when I became 15 years old, I came to a nearby town, Amba with a dream to get higher education. But, I never enjoyed study and so I left my education in between. My parents were upset with my decision. They decided to marry me to a village girl. I protested but finally they convinced me to marry. After my marriage, I started to teach small children of the neighborhood to support my family. With the money I earned, I used to buy lottery tickets. Once fine day, I won a lottery of 1000 rupees, which was a huge sum at that time. But, I spent the money to live lavishly and I was bankrupt after one year.

However, that was a turning point in my life. I forgot my past and decided to lead a decent life. I learned to repair radios at a small store and gradually started my own shop for repairing of radios. I was earning enough to lead a modest lifestyle. By that time I had two children of my own, one boy and one girl. I kept their names as “Aakash" and “Angel". They were the apple of my eyes. After the birth of Angel, my financial condition became very good as by that time I also started selling radios. She was my lucky charm and that is why i kept her name as "angel". I sent them to one of the best school because i wanted them to become a literate and responsible citizen. With the passage of time relation between me and my wife became strong and even I did not know when I started loving her.

Suddenly, one day when I was talking to one of my friend who was in Mumbai, he gave me an idea of expanding my business in Mumbai as there was lots of scope there. He had many contacts in that field. After talking to him I discussed his proposal with my wife and children. I thought I would be able to provide better education to my children who were then in 7th and 9th class. Finally, i came to a conclusion. I decided to shift to Mumbai and my wife supported me in my decision. That was the 2nd turning point of my life. We all have heard that Mumbai is a place where people come to test their destiny.

But I have never expected my destiny to take such an amazing turn. I will never forget that city. There I saw my children getting success in front of my eyes. My daughter got job of Air hostess and my son did engineering and finally got placed in "Microsoft". My business grew very fast. I along with my wife went to learn English to cope up with the pace of our children. With the passage of time, I developed a habit of planting trees in my leisure time.

Today, I am writing this story in a thought full mood while sitting on a chair with a cup of coffee in my hand in the middle of a garden full of trees planted by me. This surrounding gives me lots of peace and a sense of relaxation. Now, I don't want anything more from life. Life has given me more than what I deserved. So I must say “You will definitely get success if you are alert to tap opportunities with your determination and positive attitude ".
