The Government of India has announced that they want to create 100 Smart cities in India. Of-course, we are living in a smart
decade. We have smart phones, smart watches, smart clothes, smart cities etc. The
concept of smart city is new to India but many cities in the world like Dubai,
Amsterdam etc are considered as smart cities. The basic difference between the
traditional and the smart cities are in the way citizen participate in the
governance. Smart Cities are meant to provide higher living standard at
affordable price.
The traditional cities have many man-made
problems due to poor city planning. It is so because the development occurs
during several decades hence there is high disparity in the living standard in
several pockets of the same city. There is problem related to Pollution, excess
population, traffic management, parking, public transport system, poor
conditions of roads, street lighting, safety, garbage management, energy generation,
etc. The involvement of citizens in the governance of the city is not up to
mark. Hence to overcome these smart cities are required. They will be
constructed with proper planning and shall overcome the shortcomings of the
traditional cities.
The smart cities will be constructed
with proper planning. The schools, colleges, offices, residential complexes,
parks, shopping malls, hospital, police station, and post office shall be
constructed in such a way to ensure the citizen get maximum benefit. The waste
created by the city shall be recycled to generate energy. There must be
something to offer to the tourist so that the city can attract tourists and
shall help in generation of revenue, which shall be used for the betterment of
the city and the citizens. Smart Lighting
system can be used for lighting the city which adjust the light based on the
environment and saves power and cost. Additionally, solar panels shall be
installed and solar energy to be used for lighting and other purposes.
Smart
Traffic Management system shall be implemented to ensure that no one have to
wait at the traffic signal when the traffic is moving smoothly. Garbage
Management is essential. The city administration shall ensure that garbage is
collected from each household and heavy penalty shall be imposed for throwing
garbage here and there. Safety is taken care of each and every citizen. All the
streets must be under surveillance of CCTV cameras. Apart from this, citizens
can directly inform the concerned authorities in case of any lapse using their
smart phone and the same shall be rectified in time bound manner. The entire city
must have wifi connectivity.
There is a flip side to everything.
The smart cities are definitely the need of the hour. But they will lack the
cultural heritage and ancient monuments and memories attached with most of the
old cities like Varanasi (Benaras), Patna (Patliputra), Ayodhaya, Mathura,
Rameshwaram, Madurai, etc. The smart cities must have proper
connectivity with the major traditional cities. It will be better if they are
developed in close proximity to the traditional cities, so that people can
enjoy the best of both the cities.
