Key to Happiness: Buy Happiness for others, Get Experience for self
Disclaimer- You will need 5 minutes as this is a long and detailed answer.
We all want to be happy in our life. But, happiness cannot be a goal. A goal must be something which is more tangible and measurable. Happiness is just a perception. There have been studies in the past which proves that happiness is neither related to money nor health of a person, provided they have the minimum level of health and money to lead a modest life.
As Mr. Peter Flom has rightly said that 99 % of the things we buy is our want not need. So, the surplus money we have doesn't affect our happiness in the true sense. So, better utilize it for buying happiness for others. It will give you a wonderful experience and that experience results in your own happiness.
You are a role model for all who know you even remotely
Our society sets certain benchmarks and they are Fat paying job, a big car, beautiful/successful spouse, Big Job Title, Fan Following, etc. You are like a Perfect sharmaji's son who gives us identity crisis. Mom told me yesterday about someone earning only 36 Lakh INR Per Annum.
We have two options: either to envy them or admire them but either way most of the people are influenced by Sharmaji's son. I prefer to admire them because that prevent me from starting comparing with him and feeling inferior.
There is always a buzz about your salary and the Price of your new Flat among the people whom know you. They share your success story with all whom they know and chances are that your story always go viral with word of mouth publicity. You are a celebrity for many who know you.
But, People seldom thinks about the sacrifices one put to be successful as per the Societal standards. Neither the society ever ask you that you are happy or not. For them, Money = Success = Happiness
Making people chase their dream by busting their misconceptions about happiness is the best thing you can do for others. Inspire them to follow their dreams rather than living someone else's life. And, trust me, this will make you happier.
Truth is stranger than Fiction.
Few months ago, one of the top actress of India, Deepika Padukone has disclosed that she was under depression during the shooting of her movie "Happy New Year". I was sad to know that the actress of the movie with the title "Happy" was depressed during shooting the same. There is so much difference between reel and real life.
A man working in Buckingham Palace was subjected to domestic violence by his wife for years. Strange! More strange is that his job profile was to deal with cases of Domestic Violence.
We all live in houses of Glass. Only difference is the degree of strength to sustain all that life throws at us. Have an attitude that if someone throw egg at us then we catch it and make Omelet.
What you should do to feel happier?
Do things that you love doing- If your job is not making you feel good about yourself, find your happiness from your hobbies, cultivate Hobbies and you will get the spark that is missing in your life. Read good books, stay in touch in company of good people (online/offline) and you will feel more positive about life.
Your job is important- Think of the impact you are creating. See the bigger picture as you must be handling a key portfolio. It really do wonders if rather than thinking about your own happiness, you think of making millions of people happy with an incredible product or service. Ask the students how they feel about free Whatsapp calling. Make someone else's experience better and you will feel happy.
Still, if you are not inspired to go to work when you wake up everyday. Better switch to another job or career where your heart lies.
Love Well, Live Well, Serve Well- These things will help you feel lively and blessed. We have a limited time on this planet. Let us make our world a little more beautiful. Always strive to add value to the life of others.
Go out of your comfort zone- Money is not an issue and you must be living a cozy life. Why don't you do something which is uncomfortable just for the sake of adventure. Rather than travelling lavishly. Go and explore a place on a shoe string budget. It will be like reliving the college days and I am sure that you would love the experience. Why travelling by a State Transport Bus is not a bad idea
Secret of Happiness
There is no secret ingredient.
Don't chase happiness as you can never achieve it. Rather, Chase your dreams, Follow your heart, Slow down a bit and smell the roses, Smile at a stranger, Make a pen friend, Call you Mom/Dad/loved ones and you will find happiness instantly.
Saying that you don't have time to improve your thoughts is like saying you don't have time to stop for fuel because you are too busy driving.
The secret of Happiness is to find out what you love and then directing all your energy towards doing it.
