Why do women don't work in construction Industry?

" The is a woman behind every successful man, similarly there is no world class successful construction project where girls are not working."

This is not true that women don't have construction jobs. But Yes, the percentage of women in Construction Industry is far less compared to most of the other industries.

Why construction Industry has less women?

1. What you sow that you reap? If you sow seed of Mangoes then how can you get oranges. Less girls opt for streams like Mechanical, Civil and Electrical Engineering which comprise more than 90% of jobs in construction industry. And hence, less girls come for construction jobs.

2. There are many myths. People think that construction means working at the site. But there are many other roles which are as lucrative as any other office job. A construction company offers opportunity to work in Planning, Billing, Tendering, Contracts, Project Scheduling, Costing, Procurement, Business Development, Design, etc apart the role of site engineer/incharge.

3. Sometimes long working hours, harsh working conditions are a reality. But, there is nothing like girls don't work or can't have a better life in construction industry. I know girls who work even as Project Manager and they manage the whole site. Site work is physically tough but that can't be the reason of girls not joining construction industry as their are many other office works like mentioned in point #2.

4. I was told that I would be living in a remote village because construction industry doesn't offer an opportunity to work in a decent place. I was mentally prepared for having such a job. There is so much bias and negativity about the construction industry.  I am a Mechanical engineer working in construction industry in the heart of Mumbai for 4 years. Many girls work in my project. The number is less but the roles they have are vital and trust me they cherish working for a Prestigious infrastructure Project.

My answer is an attempt to clarify some of the myths related to construction industry.
