Why kids of 90's in India are special?

As a kid, I used to occasionally  go to video game parlour with 1 Rupee and would play Super Mario as I loved that and was good at it. The game would give me a high for 5 minutes. I wanted to also play contra but the game of contra would not last more than 1 minute as I was pretty bad at it. So, I never wasted my one ruppee on that.

I never had computer at home. I got laptop in first year as it was included in the hefty college fees.

When my classmates were playing fancy games like Age of Empire, Counter Strike, FIFA, NFS, etc. I used to Play Mario and Contra and would feel as if I played games worth 1000 rupees.

It was an amazing feeling. Hope someone can connect with this.

This is one of the 1000 incidents which make me feel that my childhood in 90's was beautiful.

My colleagues often tell me that their 5 year kid is so much in love with gadgets like I-Pad, Mobile that they can't live without it.

We feel special because the  kids of today might never know how beautiful our world was even without gadgets.

Why are NITs not as popular as IITs

Photo via Wikipedia

What are IITs? Why are we so obsessed with it? Probably, it is because of our unrequited love for IITs.

In India, IIT is not a college; it is a dream of almost every Indian aspiring to be an engineer. It is like Bollywood and Cricket which unite us against all social, cultural or religious barriers.

IIT is a sentiment, It is the sure shot ticket of success for a 17-18 year old student, at least it was my belief at that time.

IIT is an aspiration; IIT is a passion which is encouraging me to reply to this question just because I survived the preparation of IIT some 8 years ago.

IIT is a exam where after failing also, you learn so much and end up doing exceedingly well in life.

IIT is a college, which I am seeing everyday while commuting for last 4 years but can't go there.

IIT is Meeca for a Muslim, Amritsar for a sikh, Bodhgaya for a Buddhist and Kashi or Haridwar or Rameshwaram or Dwarika or Ayodhya or Mathura for a Hindu

IIT is a place where I can never go to do my B-Tech in this life.

Your question is very true and relevant. NITs are also very good but they are not famous like IITs because they are not IITs. It is as simple as that.
The glaze of IIT makes us blind and we are unable to see other good colleges. I accept that although other colleges like NITs or other private/government colleges may not be up to the standard of IITs but still many of them are good enough to provide a good platform for the future lying ahead of us.

It doesn't matter whether IIT JEE is too hot to handle for an aspirant, but you must appreciate their love for IITs.

For many of us, when we sat for IIT exam we thought of it as a big ticket opportunity of our Life. But more than 99 % of the aspirants are not selected and have to settle for NITs or other colleges.

In my family, it is a tradition to donate admission form fees for IIT JEE for 2 years before taking up anything. Jokes apart!! My sister is also an engineer and an exception to this rule!!

The Guys studying in other colleges keep their admiration for IITs as we want those things badly which we can't get. People are still getting nostalgic about @Rohan Sinha's answer to How does it feel to not qualify in IIT JEE?

Many of us are so engrossed to be at IIT that we cannot see anything ahead of or behind it.

While I was preparing for IIT, I never thought of taking admission anywhere except IITs. But forget IITs, I couldn't seal the deal for NITs due to few ranks.

Moral- IITs are IITs because of us, those who survived the preparation for JEE, but kept our crush on IITs alive. I don't know about others but Failing IIT is a reminder milestone for me which reminds me to keep pushing hard and push my limits to achieve more bigger and better challenges in pursuit of my unfulfilled dream. NITs are very good and have all the ingredients to be known as great colleges.

#MumbaiRains and Me

So, rains have already arrived in Mumbai. I was caught off guard without an umbrella yesterday while on my way to office.  One of my colleagues offered me his umbrella which we both shared. Then another gentleman whom we know also came without an umbrella. How could we have not offered him the umbrella? Thus, he was also invited to come and share the umbrella with us. It was raining heavily and except our head, everything was drenched. Anyways, this shows that we Indian are very friendly and are large hearted.

Enough of self appreciation! Actually this post is about the Mumbai Rains. This is my 5th Monsoon in Mumbai. When I was a kid, I loved monsoon because it made me skip school, my tutor would not come, I used to make paper boat and sail them in the waterlogged lane and then I would challenge my siblings in the boat race. These are simple things which made us happy. Like Little Johnny, we also didn’t wanted rain at our playtime which used to be generally from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM.

But rains were welcomed with open arms at certain time like in the morning to convince my parents that other kids would also not come to school. Or prior to the time slot my tutor would come. He was a good man, but he used to punish us for our mistakes. So, I never wanted to get tutored by him. There is one interesting thing which I remembered about him. If he ever scolds me then I wished my brother to receive the same treatment. It was so because then no one will inform our parent about the other getting scolding for not doing homework. So much has changed over all these years, then we got so many homework from school & my tutor. But now, no one is giving homework to me. I really miss them as they were the only devil from my childhood.

I am deviating from the topic, it is so because off-late I have been averse to rains and anything related to rains. Probably, the child within me has grown up. He has been more logical and rational at the cost of his carefree attitude. Things have changed for me, it changes for everyone. With time our priority changes.  Now, even if it rains cats and dogs, still I will look forward to find ways to reach office on time. Where there is time to appreciate the beauty of rains. In Mumbai, Rains and Traffic are synonymous to each other.  So, Rains means more time to commute and less time for other important things. Also, as Mumbai is a very dynamic city, hence rains put a brake on the speed of the city. Mumbaikars are always in a hurry still if you ask them anything they will stop and guide you. The city is amazing, the people are awesome. I don’t know what but I truly love Mumbai. Here, people have embraced Rains with open arms despite the fact that it makes their life a lot difficult.

There is always a risk of Flood in Mumbai during this season. So, we have to be careful as we know that in the past, people have been struck at their offices or homes for several hours to few days. But, in these testing times people have shown their true and admiring character. I have read and heard about people showing exemplary attitude to help complete stranger at such difficult times. I have read about people for whom these events were a life changer.

I was reading about a girl who offered lift in the auto-rickshaw to a guy who was also trying to find an auto to go home on a rainy day. He ends up being her friend and then later a Business Partner. Shortly, that girl met the love of her life through that stranger she met on a rainy day in Mumbai. This is one of the various stories associated with the Mumbai rains and that’s why #MumbaiRains is something extraordinary which inspires us and make us believe in humanity, love and destiny. This spirit of Mumbai is spectacular and anyone can fall in love with this city. I love Mumbai and all the things that come with it in a package like Mumbai Local, Vada Pav, Mumbaikars, Mumbai Rains, Chaos and all the other countless things. So, come whatever, I will always love  Aamchi(myMumbai.

In college, we used to either play football in the playfield or would go to the rooftop of our hostel and then will get drenched in the rains. Also, we had once trekked a small mountain near our college during rain. All those memories have again come to life in flashback while writing this. It felt so good to get fully drenched. All other worries or pressure would get vanished and you just be in the moment. I really forgot that beautiful chapter of my life. Life is all about staying happy; feeling blessed and makes others feel equally blessed. This time, I am planning to really enjoy the Mumbai rains like I last did when I was in college.
