Lessons to be Learned from Sundar Pichai

  1. Humble Background is not a disadvantage- Sundar Pichai comes from a middle class family. His father was an electrical engineer.  His father in an interview admitted that he never let their family background come in way of his education. Look at his family photo above, don't he look like the guy next door.
  2. Passion is the Key to happiness and success- He was passionate about product management and would often discuss with his father about the challenges he faced at work. What does that mean? It means that he was so passionate about what he did that he discussed about it. How can I be so sure about it? I also discuss with my Parents when I write something nice on Quora or my Blog or when something nice happens at office, so I understand this feeling :)
  3. Simplicity will make a comeback- Look at his hair style. My Mom will approve of the same as in school I had the same hair style. I should have retained it :P He looks like an epitome of simplicity.
  4. Who said that IITians don't fall in love?- He married his college mate of IIT Kharagpur Ms Anjali. So, don't think IITian are only geek, they are also romantic. So, next time don't blame that beautiful girl for your poor academics.
  5. Nothing is Permanent- He has rose from a lower middle class family to the boardroom of the most powerful Internet Services Company.  He rose to the top from the bottom and he makes me believe that nothing is permanent.
  6. We are the architect of our future- Mr Pichai makes me understand that our past decides our present and our present acts decides our future. Hence, by getting involved in meaningful pursuits we can be the architect of our future. Don't you agree?
  7. Good deeds pay off- Luck is the result of good karma and I am sure that the success of Mr Pichai is well deserved. He studied hard to get into IITs. Don't think that the competition was less because the seats were lesser and the pattern for IIT JEE was also more difficult at that time. When I was in Kota, I met an IITian was from the first batch that passed out from IIT. I told him, "Uncle at your time getting into IITs must be easy". He explained me that competition is never less. At his time there were fewer. I got the message that we must not rob others of the respect they deserve.
  8. Commitment is respected everywhere- He has been devoted to various key projects at Google for 11 years since 2004. Google was less glamorous at that time compared to today. But, that doesn't means that he was lucky. He was working as a Management Consultant at McKinsey and Company prior to joining Google. Life is all about the choices we make in life.
  9. Success is determined by Passion and the desire to push one's limit. It's all about coming out of one's comfort zone and play hard. There is no shortcut to success.
  10. Learn to have a vision for your life and career- A CEO is a visionary, he has to be a cheerleader and an inspiration for getting enormous success. No one can buy respect. Business is all about People and those who respect people and are able to inspire them are the biggest leaders. He has all the ingredients to be a successful CEO. All these qualities should be learnt from him.
  11. Value People: Give Credit don't hoard it- He is a boss that one would love to have. He projects the works of his subordinates and even make sure that those working for him get the best performance appraisal. Employees working for him feels appreciated and love to walk the extra mile because he give credit to others who deserve it and don't rob them of what they deserve. Please learn this quality and your life will be amazing. Always respect people and make sure that you add value to their life and experience.

The Most Underrated Profession In India

Mochis ( Cobblers)

In the modern time, the lifestyle of cobblers is still primitive. They don't earn enough despite being skilled and fine workmen . They are like car mechanic who repair things. Shakespeare was more generous in his appreciation and has compared them to surgeons.

Thou art a cobbler, art thou? Truly, sir, all that I live by is with the awl: I am indeed, sir, a surgeon to old shoes.
William Shakespeare

I have failed to appreciated cobblers. I appreciate a Barber every time I am happy with my hair cut. I let a Tailor know that the suit he stitched looks beautiful. I appreciate salespeople for their effort even if I don't buy their product .

I am courteous while responding to telemarketing callers as they are just doing their job. They have to earn to support their family and I have no right to make them feel bad even when I can't accept that free credit card. I wave at Watchmen at office, will say something nice to the lift man, or the sweeper. The Mochis are one of the most underrated profession  for me because I had never appreciated them when I was their regular customer.
But, the answer I am giving is based on my last experience with Mochis. They reminded me of the endless times I visited them as a kid, I used to get my sleepers repaired n numbers of times. But, I had never said them that they did a good job even when they deserved.

Why travelling by State Transport Bus is not a bad idea?

Yesterday, I went to Alibaug with my cousins and it was a welcome change from the fast paced life of Mumbai. I did crazy things; convinced my cousins not to hire a taxi and rather take a state transport bus (I loved it as I remembered the scenes from the movie Swadesh but they regret this :P). I had a secret desire to explore a place on a shoe string budget just for the heck of adventure.

I was doing things without thinking about getting judged. May be I was tired of being too formal and sophisticated and so was doing things that were definitely outside my comfort zone.

At Alibaug, We trekked Colaba Fort of Shivaji Maharaj and were amazed at it's beauty. It was raining in the sun and we took shelter under a tree. It was an amazing experience. We saw rainbow, played silly games and I was jumping in water like a kid, I was living my childhood and all of a sudden I realized that  my sophisticated sandals could not hold the thrill and were severely damaged. I was not in a position to wear them.

I thought of dumping them in Garbage Bin and buy myself new pair of sandals. But, I didn't throw them as I was enjoying carrying them in hand and getting some pictures in different poses.

Even after searching for shops for shoes/sandals, I couldn't find one till a kilometer or so. It was hurting my legs as due to being in water for  long time, they had become sensitive and walking bare-foot was really painful.

Only when I lost all hope of getting a new sandal, I saw a Mochi. My eyes glowed with hope. I went to him and requested to get my sandals repaired.  He did that within 10 minutes and during that time, I was just inquiring about him like I had been doing with many others on that day.

(He seemed immersed in his work but was patiently responding to me)

Finally He said, "Sir, it's done". Twenty Rupees.

I paid him what tiny amount he asked plus some extra money. Then, I got down and sat near him. I told him that I was desperately looking to get a sandal or shoe but couldn't find a shop. I was really thankful to him. I requested for a photo and he happily obliged. Before leaving, I told him that I will write about this on my blog.

He gave a big smile and said that, "I am just doing my job". [I felt he was saying thank you]

(By this time, three girls had arrived and they were clueless about what was going on. I happily leaved the scene with a smile)

Mochis work really hard, they don't own a shop, they work on footpath 365 days a year. Really, No work is Small.

How Does Quora Decide Which Answers To Collapse?

Quora takes help of Artificial intelligence, aka Quora Bots to collapse answers. Now, let's know how the bot decides which answer to collapse.
  • Quora Bot is just a robot and works as per guidelines fed into it.
  • We all on Quora have a rank, people rank or something similar which is considered as our Trustworthiness.
  • If I am a most viewed writer in a topic then I am allowed to post one liner there whereas my one line answers to topic- one liner used to be collapsed.
  • It can be understood as Colgate and Polgate are selling identical toothpaste at same price yet, Nora buys Colgate and shoo Polgate away.
  • I was also a Polgate and so I changed my product. I now don't answer in one word or one liner. This way, I have fewer issues with the Quora Bot which is ruthless.
  • If the question asks for something in 1 line. Rohan Sinha's answer to How would you give life advise in a single line? I write 7 one liner to shoo Quora Bot. Now, guess...who is the boss? :P
  • For example, in the snapshot you shared, you and another user answered, "Vile Parle". Your answer collapsed as your Quora rank in that topic might me less than the cutoff while the other quoran must have a rank higher that the cut off.

How Balaji Viswanathan Manages To Write Long, Elaborate And Great Answers?

As per his LinkedIn Profile, Balaji is "Product Manager at Black Duck Software".
How does he manage to write long, elaborate and great answers?
It is so because he finds time to do what will help million of people online. In the process, he became an Icon for many people across the globe. I'm an ardent fan of Balaji and here is my take on this question.
  1. Purpose driven- He is not on Quora for entertainment. He write long, elaborate and great answers which servers various purposes outside Quora.
  2. He is a published author. I took inspiration from him and Business Insider featured my suggestions on Interpersonal skills. Those answers from where the they took input had less than 20 upvotes.
  3. Upvotes don't indicate Quality. Balaji taught me early through his Quora answers that Upvotes are not a benchmark of Quality. Writing content of less or no value is a real waste of time. This left him with no choice other than quitting or writing helpful stuffs.
  4. Write stuffs that inspire your readers. While I stopped writing for audience- over a dozen quora answers got thousands of upvotes each. Balaji taught that Patience pays...Know your audience but don't write just for them. Let Quality attract readers.
  5. His answers would be an asset while writing books. I'm sure that his quora answers would help him publish many books on wide range of topics like Business Starategy, Startups, Indian History, India, Indian Ethnicity & People, Economics, Politics of India, History, World History, International Relations, Jobs and careers, etc.
  6. Balaji knows how to get lucky and that's why he finds time to write great answers Rohan Sinha's answer to How do I get some of my best Quora answers published in TIME, Forbes, Fortune like Balaji Viswanathan?
Is Balaji Viswanathan lucky?
Yes, he is!
He is lucky because he has sharp memory, good reading speed, good command over language to explain complicated things in an easy way. The analogies he uses are just awesome.
He is so lucky. I don't feel jealous of him. Because, I know how he got lucky.
Because, I know how to get published in TIME, FORBES,etc.
He is lucky because he works hard. He is a published author because he works hard, really hard. He is disciplined and self motivated. He is on quora for many years and is contributing constantly. It reflects his level of commitment. He writes quality stuffs. He entertains while explaining the most boring topics. He even upvoted couple of my really long, boring but helpful answers. So yes, he has patience, also.
Above all, he is a master execution specialist. He gets things done. When you keep learning and writing high quality stuffs that helps the readers immensely then sooner or later you will get published in TIME, FORBES,etc.
LUCKY THINGS HAPPEN WHEN WE KEEP DOING MANY THINGS!
All the best :)

How Can Quora Help Me Figure Out If I'm A Poor Writer?

I'm a poor writer when I write an answer and rather than posting it, clear the draft.
I'm a poor writer when external factors affects me and prevent me from telling my story.
I'm a poor writer when my best answers die a silent death.
I'm a poor writer when I feel that upvotes are a measure of quality.
I'm a poor writer when I don't write.
I'm a poor writer when I fail to tell my story even when nobody is interested.
I'm a poor writer when I compare myself with others.

I'm not a poor writer; I'm a budding writer. Read writing tips-Writing is Painting

An experience one should experience in lifetime

Contribute in  building an incredible product or service

One of the best experience of my life come from the fact that I have played my role in the building of a World Class Infrastructure Project, i.e the Mumbai International Airport Project, Mumbai, India.
A thing of beauty is a joy forever
Last year, we have inaugurated the Mumbai Airport's new Terminal, T2 which has made the nation proud. It feels so great when we use the Mumbai Airport as a passenger and get to know from fellow passengers that " This airport is truly amazing and world class".

I am delighted to  see others feeling proud on Mumbai Airport. It was a well coordinated team effort and our individual efforts in isolation is almost negligible considering the mammoth size of the project.

Few days ago, a colleague was traveling to China and he posted an update " We have build an amazing airport". His update was well received and we all went gaga over it. It feels like it is not an airport but our baby and we feel overjoyed with every single praise for this airport.

I believe that everyone must have a experience of  being a part of an incredible product or service that makes millions proud!

Why do some people support Yakub Memon?

Originally written on 3rd August,15

I do not support Yakub Memon and nobody should. But, I was shocked when I saw that some people ( cutting across religious lines) were sad at his hanging.

Here are the reasons why some people sympathize with Yakub Menon
  1. Media projected that he was not the main culprit : He was hanged because of his active involvement in criminal conspiracy to carry out Terrorist activities. But, media's take on the matter is that Tiger Memon and Dawood Ibrahim are roaming free and the smaller cog in the wheel has been hanged on their behalf and it's not fair.
  2. People are undermining his role in the Mumbai's Blast: Yes, I am disappointed that people fail to recognize his invaluable contributions to the shameful cause. He micro managed the finances, facilitated hawala deals, assisted Tiger Memon and Dawood Ibrahim in the planning and execution of the Mumbai Blasts. [ I am also involved in the Planning and commercial activities for a mega project and have felt that our role is often undermined compare to those who are directly involved in the execution activities. But that is a not correct and people should understand this]
  3. His background disqualify him to be a typical terrorist: He was a successful Chartered Accountant and  was probably more qualified than me. He founded a couple of companies and was technically an entrepreneur. In Jail, he completed two Master degree. One in English Literature and another in Political Science from IGNOU ( Indira Gandhi National Open University). But, still he was actively involved in the Blasts which caused death to more than 250 people and injured more than 700 people. And, this is sufficient for the death penalty he got.
  4. Some people feel that Death penalty is mostly awarded to those from the Minority:  This is a misplaced notion. My friend heard in a TV debate that in the last decade only minorities have been hanged. So, he got curious and on doing a little googling. we got to know that since 2000, 4 people have been hanged in India and out of them 3 ( Afjal Guru, Kasab and Yakub Menon) are Muslims.  Now based on only a sample size of 4 persons, media houses are conducting debates that only minorities have faced the death penalty in a decade or so. I don't think they were Muslims, terrorist don't have religion, like a rapist doesn't make all the men guilty.
  5. Some people are against death penalty: I also belong to this category with a exception when the crime is extremely shameless. The analogy used by Balaji Viswanathan that  societies do allow killing when waging a war, has comforted me as I was also confused whether I support his hanging or not.
One request- Please don't link Islam with all that is wrong. I have Muslim friends and I feel awkward when they are let down because of acts of any Kasab or Yakub. My role Model Dr. Kalam was also a Muslim by religion but as it is said
Terrorist have no religion and so do Angels like Dr. kalam.

What will Robert Frost do differently if he is made the Head of NASA?

I think Robert Frost is the ideal candidate to answer this question. But, as this question presents an opportunity to me to express my wish list hence, I dare to answer this question.

If Robert Frost become Head of NASA
  1. I wish he will do something to predict earthquakes. I know  seismic experts are there to deal with it. Natural Disaster like Earthquakes claims many lives as no one can predict when they will occur. I hope, NASA can make it possible to predict Earthquakes through some satellite imagery or other advanced technologies, which are yet to be invented.
  2. Space Tourism- I hope he will start an annual program of space Tourism and could shortlist candidates for the same irrespective of nationality. This will increase the fascination for NASA  among the masses.
  3. Virtual Museum- I hope that he will start a virtual museum which will showcase the various interesting things from the numerous missions of NASA. A virtual museum can be very popular and will create awareness about the space programs.
  4. Zero Tolerance for Accidents-  NASA has very sophisticated safety standards, but still, we have lost few astronauts in the space missions. I am from India and can definitely relate to the death of kalpana Chawla. Hope, in the future, no casualty will occur in any of the missions of NASA.
  5. I hope him to introduce pollution free fuels for spacecrafts and this will result in less harm to our environment due to the  space programs. Some new fuels have to be discovered for this purpose.
  6. Working cohesively with ISRO: I know that relation of US and India are on peak . I hope NASA and ISRO ( Indian Space Research Organisation) will work more cohesively to create path breaking success.

Is Rs 150 for a cup of Coffee in CCD is worth the price?

The cost is justified if we consider that CCDs are often used as
  • A hangout Point by youth
  • A mobile office by startup
  • A place to read, surf internet and enjoy coffee
  • A decent place to meet  prospective spouse.
I have read many answers here and they have covered most of the things,I would love to add one example:

Once founder of Mc Donald's was talking to a group of people and he asked how many of them believed that they can make better hamburgers that Mc Donald's.

Almost more than half raised their hand.

Then the Founder explained why they are a market leader in food chain restaurants across the world.

He told that we don't make the best hamburger. We are more into real estate. We give minute attention to the location of the store and the research whether a particular store or franchise will do well or not.

We think that Mc Donald's sell Burgers but they are themselves telling that they focus more on the real estate. So, there is a rare possibility of a Mc Donald's store that is less popular. They prefer corner store and in prime locations only.

So, is the case with CCDs

PS- Long time ago, I read about this story of Mc D in the book " Rich Dad Poor Dad"

I am in BIT GOA. How should I react if I get taunts for not getting into IITs?

I can totally relate to what it must have felt to get taunts for not getting into IITs.

I know how it feels when dreams shatters without creating any noise. I have seen the same road...only thing is that I didn't had the marks to get through BIT SAT, I got into KIIT University.

From my experience, here is my response to your query
  1. Move On- There are amazing things you can learn at BITSAT and can achieve anything you want to do in life. Don't feel bad for not getting into IITs even if someone remind you about it.
  2. Accept that you failed at some thing you wanted to achieve and its perfectly Ok. Less that 1 out of 100 get through IITs and it doesn't mean that others are inferior.
  3. Just to remind you of that even Venkatraman Ramakrishna failed to clear IIT JEE but later on in life went on to get Nobel Prize in Chemistry.Nobel laureate Ramakrishnan failed IIT, medical entrance tests
  4.   You can read how I dealt with not getting into IITs Rohan Sinha's answer to How does it feel to not qualify in IIT JEE?
  5. Don't react to those who remind you of your crush (read IIT), you feel upset because you have studied hard. But, when you will learn to laugh about it then those people will not bother you anymore.

Why do people write on Quora?

I am damn selfish. I didn't knew this. I write on quora because the thought provoking questions inspire me to pour my heart on questions that brings me to life.

I am selfish because I write for myself. I don't answer A2As often, but if I know I can be helpful then I message the questioner if they are not anonymous. I pick questions that I like to answer.

I care about upvotes, but only from a few people with whom I have an unspoken connect. Their upvotes makes me happy. After that, it hardly matters.

I write because it make me happy. Only good thing is that I also try to make sure that I give back to those who stumble upon my answers.

To overcome the guilt of being a selfish writer. I do some penance but that's also selfish. In some of my answers I invite people to ask me anything.

I do respond to those who message me after all, my day job involves meeting people and I have learned to be available for those who need me (not want me). Have a good time :)

Why do some people quote high credit for answering on Quora?

To avoid getting Flooded with questions

Let me tell from my own experience. I am someone who don't want to keep things pending. Hence, I keep a higher credit for A2A to avoid getting flooded with questions that I don't feel like answering.

Funny things is that when I need to ask a question, I prefer to shoot my question to those who answer for free or less credits.

When I dig deeper to know the root cause of this behavior, I felt that I love to search questions on my own and write answer if I feel I can add some value to the discussion going on.

I too have an option to pass the question but have rarely used it . I look forward to curb my own double standards someday.

Your question connected  the right chords and I spilled all that I had to say.

PS- This is not a Ask to Answer (A2A). But thanks for asking. Hope I am the first one to respond :)

Why do some people look down at bird feeding?

Not all people look down at bird feeding. I love to feed birds occasionally. In Mumbai, you can see many people feeding birds in early morning or in the evening. The Kabutarkhana in Dadar is just awesome for those who want to feed pigeons.

Some, like the management of our housing society look down at bird feeding as they feel that
  1. The dropping of the birds soil the terrace, garden and swimming pool
  2. The birds are sometimes infected with diseases and they can lead to air borne disease in residents, specially old people and kids.
  3. The society has to incur more cost for housekeeping due to the filth created by the birds.

Are IITians arrogant about their achievements

Let us re-frame the question the other way round... Does other Indian feel that they are inferior to the IITians.

Do other Indians (preferably IIT aspirants) have felt once in their life that not getting into IIT was a failure.

Hope, we get the answer that IITans are precieved as arrogant because of our own inferiority complex...not because of their nature or achievements.

We are still discussing Rohan Sinha's answer to How does it feel to not qualify in IIT JEE?
