ASCI Ambassador Rohan Sinha

`

#ASCIAmbassador Rohan Sinha

The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) featured me as ASCI Ambassador on 23rd May 2015.

Thoughts on work ASCI do

It has empowered common people to voice their dissent against misleading advertisements. In this way, it is taking up our complaint with the mighty advertisers and is raising the standard of advertising by self regulation of advertising industry.  It is working to ensure that ads are reliable and trustworthy. It provides fast and fair judgment which is respected and abided by one and all.

Experience with ASCI

I had reported regarding a misleading TVC which was upheld by ASCI and the advertiser has to take down the TVC. It was an incredible feeling to know that genuine complaint of a common man has lead to removal of a TVC which was displayed on TV during prime time.

I came to know about ASCI only few month ago just by accident. One day I was surfing furiously to know, how to initiate action against advertisements which are misleading customers. To my sheer surprise, I found that there is a full fledge self regulating body for the same which is working for past 30 years. I consider myself highly educated and tech savvy, still it took me so long to know about a wonderful organization like ASCI.

Way Forward

I personally feel that we need to aggressively promote ASCI and create awareness about the initiatives taken by it. We have to take the name of ASCI to every family of India. We have a long way to go. When more and more people come forward and voice their concerns regarding misleading and false advertisements then only we can take the advertising standards to the next level.

Official update from ASCI featuring me as ASCI Ambassador

7 Tips from a Startup Evangelist to budding entrepreneurs

Every other day, I come across a new company which is trying to carve a market for itself. I often wonder about their future. It is really fascinating that they may make their founders millionaire  or they might leave them high and dry. But, the experience you get  by starting up is unmatched. I have high admiration for people who come out of their comfort zone to chase their dreams. Someone from them will be our own Bill Gates, Steve Jobs or Larry Page.

Let us see what are the 7 tips  from a Startup Evangelist to budding entrepreneurs.

1. Website- Your website has to be truly cool and amazing. It should looks neat and appealing.

2. Price- I remember a time when Mac Donalds, Dominos and KFC were the restaurants for the elite. They recognized that this perception is affecting their business prospects and hence came up will inexpensive food items on their menu along with all the other items just to attract new customers into their outlets. Also, I know of a Salon in Vashi, Mumbai which initially offered all kinds of hair cut at Rs.100/- , which was much less than the market price. The outlet started to flourish and after sometime they gradually increased the price. But the steady flow of customers never stopped. I think you can take a lesson or two in pricing strategy from these.

3. Marketing/ Audience- Word of mouth is one of the most reliable mode of marketing for the unaided start-ups. Also, you need to start engaging people on social networking sites. You can keep on sharing interesting things related to your product or services. It will be appreciated by your audience if you manage to engage them through puzzles, links to good articles, short videos, interesting quotes, etc.

4. Customer support- Once you start getting large number of orders then you will require an excellent customer support center to manage feed backs and assist the customers. All your good work will be forgotten If you are unable to delight your customers. A strong customer support is desirable to gain the trust of the customers. Remember that the competition is stiff and almost everyone is focused on getting order and marketing. Customer Support is a dark horse hence focussing on it will yield brilliant results.

5. Safety- Whatever you are offering to the customers, you have to think about the safety of the consumers. The recent Maggi fiasco is a live example where a safety scare is giving nightmare to Nestle, not only in terms of revenue but also in terms of loss of valued customers. One safety concern can tarnish the image of your brand.

6. Payment Modes- At the very initial stages, you might have only cash on delivery option. I know there are lots of complications in integrating the net banking, card payment modes etc and it will take some time to get it done. However, you can strike a deal with companies like Paytm who are aggressively marketing their wallet. It will not only allow your customers to have a facility to pay online but this arrangement will also help in marketing as you will have access to the huge numbers of members/users of Paytm. It might be a master stroke at this stage.

7. Promo codes- Earlier the brick and mortar companies used to offer discounts on special occasions like Diwali, New Year, Christmas, etc. Now, with Promo codes the next generation companies are giving a tough time to their traditional competitors.
Two clear benefits of offering discounts through promo codes rather than simply offering flat discount are:
· It creates engagement with the company as people will keep searching and talking regarding the current offers like we do for foodpanda. It’s a dynamic process and is not like the offers from brands which have flat 80% discount throughout the year.
· There are various companies/ websites like savemyruppee, coupondala, etc. which are the     encyclopedia of the current offers and deals offered by the companies. They will offer a mode of alternate free marketing.

Crazy Deal- We, Indians are crazy about deals and are generally conscious about money. So, consider to offer something similar to the following so that people are tempted to experience your services.

·Tinyowl is offering 100 % cashback on your first order ( Maximum discount – Rs. 150)

·Foodpanda started offering crazy discounts to a tune to 50%

·Box8, a startup from the IIT fraternity is offering discounts generously on delivery on food.

Please know that I acknowledge that these companies have started getting Investments and hence are able to offer free lunches on large scale for some time. However, you can try the following:

·Engage peoples on your social media pages and conduct simple competitions and sometimes offer an inexpensive item like a book, key ring, photo frame, coffee mug, etc with your company name embossed on them to few people. Tag the person whom you are offering a gift so that his friend circle will get to know about your company and in this way you can develop your brand name.

·It is prudent to make your customers feel like Royals and they will be your brand ambassador forever. Some of the companies like Bigstylist  and Medioctor are truly promising as they have a strong founding team and their offering is unique. While Bigstylist wants to transform the way people do styling by literally bringing the salon to their home. Whereas, Medioctor wants to be a one-stop solution for all the healthcare requirements of people in India. It is exploring a huge market and good thing is that it is banking on support from all the stakeholders like doctors, chemists, patients, pharma companies, hospitals, fitness centres, diagnostic centres, etc. I have no doubt that they are all set to be big players in their respective fields.

I follow startups closely and am deeply fascinated by the idea of running a company.   However, I acknowledge that a lot of hard work and passion is involved in it.

Tracing My Family Tree

Photo via Google Images

[PS- I have a passion for writing and a curiosity to know regarding my ancestors. I want to document about the life and history of my forefathers. It might sound old fashioned and ridiculous but probably, that’s my way to pay tribute to them.]

What do you know about your ancestors? Most of the times, we don’t know even very basic details about our ancestors beyond last 2-3 generations.

Someday, I heard that our community follows a “special house” system to trace our origins. According to them, we are Maldahiyar as my ancestors migrated to Bihar from Malda in West Bengal. I wanted to know about my ancestors in detail. But, I couldn’t get extensive information beyond last few generations.  I wanted to know the reason of migration but couldn’t get a convincing response. Also, I am not sure why there is no effect of the Bengali background on our language or culture.

I have many Bengali friends who are now staying in Bihar for last 50 years and they recognize themselves as native of Bihar. But, one key difference between them and us is that while they speak in Bengali and have their Bengali culture intact whereas we don’t know to speak Bengali at all and don’t have any influence of Bengal.

I guess that we might have migrated 100-200 years ago and the prominence of Bengali language and culture faded away in our community.

You may be surprised to know that I have never asked my Father regarding this as I never felt any curiosity to know about my great great grandfathers and ancestors. However, now I find a deep sense of purpose to map the entire migration chart of my ancestors for last 1000 years at least. I know this is an uphill task but I don’t know why but I really want to know about them.

Most of the people from my community are learned and highly educated. This is a tradition from olden times. But, there is very little written about their own history. Why?

I am planning to interview people from my community who might be having some information about their past.

My questions are-

1)    Where are your ancestors from?
2)    Do you know from where to where they migrated and why?
3)    What you know about your grandfather, great grandfather, great-great grandfather?  Their place,  occupation, lifestyle, food habits, etc.
4)    Anything interesting that you would like to share.

Your response might help me track my lineage beyond the last 3-4 generations. I know now nobody is interested in these wild goose chases but let me give it a try.

The Perfect Boss

Today, I am going to dedicate this post to my ex- boss, Mr. Santanu Guha (former DGM & Head-Procurement at L&T). He is a man whose relationship with all his teammates and subordinates was very co-ordial and warm. When we first came to know that he is planning to move to some other company. We were shocked as he had started his career with L&T and had been growing steadily with the same company for last 18 years. With a heavy heart, I thank him for his invaluable contributions to my life.

My relationship with you was not that of a boss and a subordinate. You have always been more of a friend and a mentor. I remember sharing my personal as well as professional problem with you. You have given us the space to try and experiment. You have been appreciative when I have done something correctly but you have never ever criticized me even if sometime I may have deserved it. I have never seen you losing temper and that is a quality, I personally admire a lot. You have a personal touch which makes it easier for everyone to approach you.

You are a remarkable leader, who has always led from the front and have guided us, motivated us and appreciated us throughout our journey together. I still remember my first day at MIAL when I met you for the first time. I was really happy and impressed by your personality. I was fortunate to be with you while we negotiated with the bidders and clients for various packages.  Every meeting presented different learning opportunities for me. I am indebted to you for sharing your knowledge with me without any inhibition. I really want to express my admiration of your top class negotiation strategies which I have witnessed from conception to execution on various occasions.

You have a larger than life stature. Your popularity as a candid, jovial, friendly and compassionate person is a well established fact. You have outstanding rapport not only in our organization but also with clients and contractors. We have immense respect for you and I feel proud that I worked and grew under your guidance.

You are RK Laxman of Analogies. I am always mesmerized by your apt examples and analogies. I believe this art along with your outstanding communication skills set you apart from the rest. You have an ability to explain things in such simple manner that you can teach anything to anyone. I request you to consider an additional role of being a visiting Professor for some top notch Institutes at some point in future. College Undergraduates admire people from Industry as they have a hunger to know the practical application of the knowledge imparted to them.

I am pleased to know that you are going to a play a crucial role in the International Arena. I shouldn’t be selfish; hence I am also glad for those young minds, which are going to be nurtured under your mentorship. I wish you all the luck, success and happiness in life and your future assignments. May we always find you and your family members in the best of health!

Now I am concluding with a hope that someday our paths will cross again and we shall get an opportunity to meet and work together in future.

Mentoring- Writing Exercise for my Siblings

I have given an assignment to my siblings to write about the last movie they saw. Here is what they have written.

Last Movie I Saw - By my bro

Last movie I saw was “PK”. It was an awesome movie starring Aamir khan and Anushka Sharma. After the success of 3 idiots, Rajkumar Hirani once again proved that he is an amazing director in Bollywood. Everyone addressed Aamir Khan as PK, actually PK was not his name, and due to his unusual activities, everyone named him PK. In PK, Aamir Khan was an alien who landed somewhere in Rajasthan for researching people on this planet.

After few minutes of landing, his locket was stolen by a local thief. The locket was only way by which he could return to his own planet. Later on, he realized that only god can solve his problem in getting his locket back.

He soon meets Anushka Sharma (Jaggu) in Delhi metro while distributing pamphlet in which it was written that if anyone found god please contact PK. Jaggu was a journalist and worked for a news channel. Jaggu decided to help PK in finding his locket. His locket was with a Tapasviji (god men) who purchased it from the thief and spreading rumors among all that it was a part of shivjee but actually it was Aamir’s asset.

PK is a brilliant movie  which is full of entertainment.

Last Movie I Saw –  By my sis

The last movie I saw was "Bang-Bang". It was a nice movie because Hrithik and Katrina were there . As usual, Hrithik played a nice job. The movie was based on the story of 2 brothers in which one brother (Hrithik) takes revenge from a person who killed his brother. Both of them belonged to Indian army.

In the very beginning, Hrithik Roshan's brother sacrified his life for the country. When khalifa (let’s say enemy gang was khalifa) was killing him at that time also there were no fear in his eyes. The movie continues, and then there was news on the TV that someone has stolen the XYZ_diamond from very tight security and showed the face of Hrithik in the CCTV footage.

After that Katrina Kaif was shown searching for some guy on a website. The website arranged a meeting for her with a guy in the restaurant. When she came for the meeting she was nervous but excited at the same time .But that guy was late. After some time Hrithik Roshan came and talked to her as he was the guy she was waiting for. Then he impressed her, suddenly something happened and he went away. Actually some khalifa's member came there by looking after XYZ_diamond thief as they wanted that diamond from  him for ABC reasons(that i don't remember).

After few meetings she came to know that he lied to her and she became angry. But till that was too late. Hrithik could not leave her as her life was in danger because of him as khalifa's gang knew about her .After that Hrithik planned something to keep Katrina safe and to reach his destination. He manipulated Katrina and he did not tell her the true reasons and the actual  plan .His aim was to reach the khalifa's head.

Everything happened according to his plan and he was able to take revenge for his brother's death. And later it is shown that no Diamond was stolen from anywhere. All these were just a part of the plan made by him and his head and he was told to keep it as secret. Then he went to meet his family after a long time who did not have any idea about him. The movie happily ended with Katrina and Hrithik together

Why Quality is a Dark Horse

Of course, many a times, we have heard whether quality checks and controls are enhancing the progress or are undermining it. It is high time that we address this topic so that we can understand the role of quality. Quality is not something which can be induced from external sources. It is an integral part of our life and our work culture. We cannot achieve anything unless the quality of our work is good. In this fast paced world, sometimes we feel that giving more priority to quality affects the progress of the work at hand. However, many will be glad to know that actually it is the other way round, i.e. adhering to quality norms is the sure shot formula of progress. A poor quality job is a waste of money, effort and brings disrepute. Whereas, good quality is something which delights, motivate and encourage to work.

Working by following all the quality checks, controls and procedures will result in fewer or no reworks. If people strive to do justice to their job by doing quality work then the progress will be enhanced. It promotes a culture of doing things correctly in one go rather that the trial and error method of working. Also, it improves the morale of the team and boast their self confidence which enables them to be more productive and hence we can rightly confirm that quality enhance progress.

We, Indians are very cost conscious but we also have to be quality conscious to reach new heights. In this competitive world, everyone is trying to outdo others by becoming more and more cost effective. However, we can create benchmark by doing works with impeccable quality standards. It is the only way to beat the competition and go far ahead from our competitors. We must follow a system of rating the quality of our employees and our suppliers. It should be given due importance at the time of awarding jobs to subcontractors.

We have wonderful examples which prove that quality enhances progress. Do you know how Apple sustained the cut throat competition in the mobile manufacturing industry? Apple has its own customer base that appreciates and admires the excellent quality of apple products and they purchase the apple phones despite high cost because of outstanding quality. The quality of apple is driving the company forward. On the other hand, cheap Chinese phones have a reputation of being a use and throw product due to poor quality standards.

Outstanding Quality standards enhance the customer delight and result is more jobs for the company. It signifies the progress of the company which in turn is contributing in the progress of the nation. We are working for the nation and have contributed to the wonderful gateway to the world- Our new Mumbai Airport.  So, trust us Quality will only enhance PROGRESS and will never ever undermine it.
