PM Vajpayee: The Power of one Vote and whether 13 is an unlucky number

This is my response on Quora to a Question which reads " What are some Interesting stories related to Elections"

My favorite PM,Atal Bihari Vajpayee was sworn in as PM three times. The first two times, the number 13 proved unlucky for him. In 1996's Lok sabha Election, BJP emerged as the single largest party, so Vajpayee was invited to form the government and he was sworn in as PM. But the BJP failed to garner enough support from other parties to obtain a majority and Vajpayee resigned after 13 days after delivering an awesome speech in Parliament. In 1998 Lok Sabha election, again BJP emerged as the single largest party. This time a coalition NDA formed by BJP came into being. Vajpayee was once again sworn in as the PM.

The NDA proved its majority in House but this government lasted for just 13 months. It fell in mid-1999 when the AIADMK withdrew its support to the Vajpayee led government which lost the vote of confidence in the Lok Sabha by a single vote.

Just because of one Vote NDA was ousted from power and again India has to spend thousands of Crores of Tax Payer's money for reelection.

The Opposition couldn't form government and so the Lok Sabha was once again dissolved and fresh elections were held, the NDA came back with an full majority and Vajpayee became the PM for the third time. This time his government completed full term of five years and till date is the only non-congress government to do that.

Edit- Thanks Abhinav Shahi for sharing this!I am shocked and thrilled to know that CP Joshi, a CM candidate,  lost by just one vote and his mother, wife and driver didn't voted in that election.
